An Interview With Dope Ass Guitarist Bella Moulden

What ages did you start singing and playing the guitar?

I started singing at 9 along with playing the piano, followed by ukulele, guitar, bass, and percussion. I started playing lead at the age of 17.

Any favorite bands/artists that motivate or inspire you?

Jimi Hendrix, Prince and the Revolution, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Betty Davis!

Which guitar/company you think fits the best with your sound and style?

I already have a good relationship with Gibson and Eastwood Guitars! Don’t make me choose! Haha, but both really fit my style with their retro-style model guitars. I’m hoping Gibson will make a custom 4/6 double neck for me. That’d be sick!

Growing up in Buffalo, NY what’s the music scene like there?

The music scene is great, I think! We have some gems like Rick James and the Goo Goo Dolls. Buffalo is known for its great food and arts; we have the coolest Music is Art festival! I’m hoping to take a trip soon and play at a few of their great venues.

Which 3 musical artists would you like to collab with?

Lenny Kravitz, Joan Jett, and Stevie Nicks!

What’s your main focus for 2024?

My focus is to continue doing what I do and be patient. I’m very grateful for how far I’ve come in such little time. There are so many great opportunities that I’ve been fortunate enough to have. I’m focusing on the positive and doing what I love in the process.

Musicians travel all over the world! Which city is a must that you must play? I’ve traveled and performed in most of the cities I wanted in the US. A must-play would be across the pond for sure! The London music scene is wicked!

What was the best show you ever played?

Where things were perfect or close to it. I’d say JBL Fest, where I opened for Rexha. Was such a great night. Though I solo’d it with a loopstation and a few instruments, it was still a great well-done show. Place was packed in! Also made quite a few new fans, of course.

We need to know what your Spotify looks like right now. Who’s the top 8 artist you’re listening to?

Hendrix, Bowie, The Clash, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, and Rage Against the Machine.

If Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson, Tyler, the Creator, and SZA all wanted to sign you, who are you going with and why?

Lenny Kravitz hands down! Feel like Lenny would catch my drift being a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist himself. Kravitz wouldn’t be the type to box me in, ya know? Feel like he’d push me to stay out of that box!

Do you have anything you want to tell the younger generation of women coming up in the music industry?

Be PATIENT. This industry is brutal—especially black artists in indie/rock/alternative. You’ll find the right people at the right time. Don’t jump for the first deal especially if they’re trying to make you someone you’re not. Stay true to yourself and your artistic values. Also don’t get discourage with social media. The numbers you see don’t determine your talent or skill.
