What made you think of your Cosplay name?
Hina was a name given to me the first time I was in a Dangan Ronpa panel at a convention! I was Aoi Asahina and none of the cast knew each other so we just called each other by our characters names and mine was shortened to Hina! It just kind of stuck after that!
What made you get into Cosplay modeling?
I think cosplay modeling is amazing and a great way to show off your work or the work of others! I enjoy it for myself because I think it shows that any body type and any ethnicity can cosplay! I would definitely love to do it more.
How long have you modeled?
I’ve only ever done a couple “professional” cosplay photo-shoots. Usually when friends ask if I want in but, again, I’d love to do it more! Always interested.
Who’s your favorite character to model?
Aoi Asahina has definitely been my favorite to do professional shoots of. I find it easy to really capture her cheery upbeat personality in photos! I’ve done multiply shoots as her.
My second favorite was Bunnysuit Overwatch (I was Sombra). It was in a group with other friends who did bunny suit’s of other Overwatch heroes and we were stopped so many times walking around the con. The shoot was kind of on a whim because a friend offered to do it randomly!
Do you buy outfits or do you make them yourself?
I’d say a mix! When I first started cosplaying, I made them all from scratch or altered pieces but lately I’ve commissioned pieces of cosplays from friends just to make it a little easier and help support & promote their work.
What do you feel about the presence of (or lack thereof) POC in the Cosplay scene?
I think it’s sad because I feel like a lot of POC’s don’t cosplay because they feel like their skin has to match the character and I can understand that to an extent because I was the same way when I first started so I only cosplayed characters with tan skin but then I realized I was missing out on some of my favorite characters because of their skin color so I thought “why am I limiting myself like this? I can cosplay whoever I want no matter what!” so now that is what I do and I think every POC should as well!
What are your favorite Cosplay events to attend?
Two cosplay events that have yet to disappoint me are Anime Weekend Atlanta and Holiday Matsuri. They are always always fun! Always something to do and nice people to talk to and make friends with! The cosplays are always great and it’s never felt like I was being looked down upon.
Are you watching any dope animes or any shows with Cosplay worthy characters?
I’ve been watching a lot of Archer and I LOVE Lana Kana so much! She’d be awesome to do a shoot as!
What are your top 3 favorite animes?
This is a tough question! I think my number one favorite anime is Space Dandy. #2 would have to be Sailor Moon and #3 would probably be Black Butler!
Who was the photographer of your chosen photo?
The photographer for my Aoi Asahina cosplay was NA Studio and my photographer for my Ashley cosplay was Six Shooter Photography.
Can you tell us anything about them? Maybe why you dig them as a photographer or a cool story about you two?
Both of them are super sweet people! They are crazy talented and deliver the photos in a timely manner. They make shooting with them fun because they’re always joking and laughing and help you pose if you aren’t sure what to do. I remember when I was having issues trying to reflect Ashley’s demeanor in photos, Six gave me some tips on what to do and think about to help get the face right and she didn’t mind helping me pose! They’re both just really creative and awesome and I highly recommend them both,
Is there anything you want your fans and the fans of PUNK BLACK to know?
You guys are awesome! Thank you so much for everything you do! For all of you that are POC and hesitating to cosplay a character because of your skin color, do it! You matter and are valid!
