An interview with Victory Cosplay

What made you get into Cosplay modeling?

I got into cosplaying modeling from a college friend, she was active in the scene at the time and wanted me to experience it.

What made you think of your cosplay name?

My brother thought of it. He wanted something unique that would make us stand out from people and he came up with the last name Victory and we both started using it since.

Where do you live? How is the cosplay scene there?

Michigan. The Cosplay scene has a medium base. Youmacon is our biggest con, it has attendees all over the states to come out and attend that convention. We maybe only have 4 cons a year but that’s the most thriving.
We also occasionally have meet ups.

How long have you modeled?

I’ve been modeling since I was 12 but it was more of clothing fashion for sears and other stores to promote their clothing.
Cosplay wise I have been cosplaying since 2012.

Who’s your favorite character to model?

My favorite character to be is D.Va from Overwatch.

2nd favorite?

My second favorite is 2B from Nier automata.

Do you buy outfits or do you make them yourself?

Both sometimes I get costumes commissioned if it’s out of my skill range.
I’ve been really busy this year so sadly I only had time to make two costumes.

When was the first time you saw Star Wars?

First time I saw star wars was when phantom Menace came out. I saw it in theaters and  I’ve seen every prequel when it first came out since then, as well as marathoned the old films.

Who’s your favorite character?

My favorite character is Finn and Anakin skywalker. I love Finn’s passion to help Rey and discover himself. While, I love Anakin’s dark tale of being the hero turned villain.

What do you feel about the presence of (or lack thereof) POC in the Cosplay scene?

As a fellow POC I believe we should be more in the limelight. There’s a ton of us that are talented and deserve to have opportunities just as much as other mainstream cosplayers. We should be in magazines and guesting really big conventions along with other cosplayers. Diversity is really needed and it’s ridiculous it hasn’t changed yet with the amount of exposure and talent that so many POC cosplayers provide.

What are your favorite Cosplay events to attend?

My favorite Cosplay events is Dragoncon and Anime expo. I love the community and the chill aura of the events and it makes it fun for me to Cosplay with that environment.

Are you watching any dope animes or any shows with Cosplay worthy characters?

Sadly not watching anything of Cosplay note right now but the anime Scum Wish is a really good emotional anime. Not something I’m going to Cosplay from but, I’ll probably be starting my Hero Academia(cosplay) when I get a break in school.

What are your top 3 favorite animes?

Golden Time
Code Geass
For me! I love emotional animes and I also like mechs!

Who was the photographer of your submitted photos?

The Photographer is SF Design! His Facebook is also Facebook.com/sfdesign

Can you tell us anything about them? Maybe why you dig them as a photographer or a cool story about you two?

He understands my vision of what I want to come to life. I want certain pictures to feel like a movie. That’s why I shoot with him most of anything star wars related we get along well with the ideas of how the picture should go and what the feeling and story behind the picture is.
Funny thing I was a fan of him and knew who he was way before lol- he was caught of guard and shocked by my enthusiasm!

Is there anything you want your fans and the fans of PUNK BLACK to know?

I want everyone to know that we POC cosplayers are out here! Working day by day to make our voices known and heard! Thank you for supporting us, and every little bit helps to make this happen. Without you guys we wouldn’t have gotten as far as we have!
