An Interview With HimeKaye Cosplay

How did you get into cosplay?

My best friend got me into it back in 2013! She was like “hey you’re a big ole nerd! There’s this convention that’s here and we should dress up!” So I went and we were Number 3 and Number 5 from the show Codename : Kids Next Door! I just remember the smiles we put on everyone’s faces because this was a show aired in the early 2000’s. So it was nostalgic for them, and at that moment I thought “this is something I see myself doing for awhile”.

How long have you modeled?

Only seriously for the past 4 months! I had my first ever photoshoot back in August of last year. I started doing it more often in January!

Do you cosplay often? If so what is your favorite character to cosplay? If not what would be your favorite character to cosplay?

I’d say so! I try to do one or two new cosplays every month! So far my favorite has been Kim Possible!

2nd favorite?

2nd favorite would have to be my Kitana cosplay from the game Mortal Kombat!

Do you buy your outfits or do you make them yourself?

Both!! Mainly buy at the moment, but in the very near future I’m hoping to start consistently making my own!

What was your first major project and how did you achieve it?

My first major project was Kagome from the anime Inuyasha! Honestly, by pure stubbornness! My mom is a seamstress and I had taken one sewing class back in 8th grade so I thought that it would be easy. Well I was wrong. I took one look at the pattern and was like… no, but I had already bought the fabric and everything I needed. So I sucked it up, and it actually turned out really well!

Tell us a little about your unique cosplay style.

Well, I try to cosplay females  in shows and video games that I can relate to personally. I find traits that I have in myself so when I do shoot them I can really bring out the character.

What has been an invaluable resource for you while running your business?

The most valuable resource for me has been the unyielding support from my friends and family. I’m still very new to Cosplay modeling and would love to further my career. I truly believe I can because whenever I’m not feeling so great about a cosplay they’re all there to say otherwise!

What do you feel about the presence of (or lack thereof) POC in the mainstream media?

I feel like we’re starting to take a step in the right direction with the premiere of Black Panther and shows like Luke Cage but we still have a ways to go before we are represented adequately. I’m hopeful though.

What are your favorite events to attend?

Like many cosplayers, I love going to comic cons! The two major ones I try to go to every year is Phoenix Fan Fest (formally Phoenix Comicon) and Saboten Con, which is a primarily anime convention!

Are you watching any dope animes or any shows with Cosplay worthy characters?

My Hero Academia!! It aired in 2016 and it follows the story of Izuku “Deku”  Midoriya becoming a professional hero! There are SO MANY characters that I want to cosplay: male and female! Currently, I have my eyes on Momo Yaoyorozu!!

Who was the photographer of your submitted photos?

Kagome was Hynmayproductions on IG and Facebook

Kim Possible and Kitana were both shot by gnerdcorner on IG and Facebook

Chun-Li was Apologetic Cosplay on Facebook

Tifa Lockhart and Nami were Midas Touch Art on IG and Facebook

Can you tell us anything about them? Maybe why you dig them as a photographer or a cool story about you two?

Gnerdcorner is such a dedicated photographer! When we did my Kim Possible shoot we both got a work out! He was literally on the ground at some points!

Hynmayproductions has a really good eye for locations! I drove down to Tucson and then up a mountain to do that shoot and it was absolutely perfect! He’s good at candid shots as well! My friend was accompanying me and she was making me laugh really hard! He got it on camera and I absolutely love that photo!

Apologetic cosplay was new to doing photo shoots outside of conventions.  I was his first scheduled guinea pig and the photos turned out amazing! I look forward to working with him again!

Last but not least, Midas Touch was the first photographer I’ve ever modeled with! I was nervous but he actually made it really easy for me!

Is there anything you want your fans and the fans of PUNK BLACK to know?

I just want to thank everyone who has supported me thus far and I appreciate you all! Also I just want to remind everyone to support all cosplayers and cosplay photographers! No matter if they’ve been cosplaying for years or a couple day,  everyone needs support!
