What made you think of your Cosplay name?
It’s kind of a cute short story really. Back in 8th grade my friends and I use to call each other by fruits as a sort of nick name and ‘Kiwi’ completely stuck with me. So when the time came and I created a YouTube channel I thought of my first love, “sasuke uchiha” from the Naruto anime and I just combined the two and ‘kiwiuchiha’ was born. haha. What made you get into Cosplay modeling?I would see all these amazing professional photos online of cosplayers and I would say to myself “man I really wanna do that”, so I asked a good friend of mine if her aunt, who does freelance photography, would be into shooting pictures of me in cosplay and after the photos came back I realized how much I love being in front of the camera and so we have been working together ever since. How long have you modeled?
3 years now
Who’s your favorite character to model?
Definitely Midna from the legend of Zelda series. Even though it takes me like 2hours to get into everything, I can honestly say its worth it. From the confidence she exudes and all her playful sarcasm, to her graceful essence, I believe all of that shows very evident in my photos as she is a character I can identify with the most.
Is there one particular cosplay that you’re dying to do?
My dream cosplay has always been Starfire , from the teen titans series, ever since I was little. But at the moment I am currently really into Boa Hancock from One Piece. I like to find characters that fit my personality or whose stories just really stick out to me, and challenge myself with the intricate designs of their costumes.
Do you prefer to buy your cosplays or make them yourself?
I make 90% of my cosplays most of the time and the other half I buy. It really depends on if I have worked on a few costumes at a time and then I’m so burnt out that I become lazy and just want to buy my next cosplay ahahaa.
What do you feel about the presence of (or lack thereof) POC in the Cosplay scene?
I really feel that POC’s should try to stand more in the spotlight to show new coming cosplayers that ” Yes, you can cosplay if you are black or mixed or whatever ethnicity”. I remember a time when I was explaining to a friend how cool cosplay was and that they should try it and I remember them saying “can black people cosplay” and I just laughed it off and said “yeah, if you go to a con you see them everywhere” , but at the same time it struck me like “do other people of color have this same mindset” because my skin never really occurred to me when I started my cosplay journey. Recently there have been post about internet trolls completely tearing into this one Dva cosplayer just because of the color of her skin and I was really saddened by this because that gives the cosplay community, as a whole, a bad rep and that’s completely untrue. Most of the time you get closed minded opinions from people who don’t even cosplay and that just makes me wanna cosplay even harder just to piss them off ahaha and show them that no matter what, I’m going to do what I love whether you like it or not.
What are your favorite Cosplay events to attend?
I have recently started trying to go to Kamicon and Hamacon every year because they are close to my area. We also have this “cosplay in the gardens” event yearly near me, where a bunch of cosplayers and photographers come and hangout and take pictures and generally get to know each other and its amazing and so much fun.Are you watching any dope animes or any shows with Cosplay worthy characters?
Of course! I recently finished a series by the name ‘ Akuma no riddle or Riddle story of devil” and even though most of the outfits are simple the characters are really the main focus along with crazy weapons. Not to give anything away but the show follows an assassin trying to protect her friend from 11 other assassins in a special class called class black. I’m currently cosplaying a lot as the character “Banba” from this anime and she is a whole new bowl of crazy that I’ve never experienced, as she has split personality disorder, so its very fun taking pictures with knives and blood.
What are your top 3 favorite animes?
Definitely Naruto because that anime was my starter and will always hold a special place I my heart. Then Nabari no ou and the Daily life of highschool boys, that one always cracks me up.
Who was the photographer of your chosen photo?
Can you tell us anything about them?
Maybe why you dig them as a photographer or a cool story about you two? I can definitely say that she picks amazing locations for shoots. I really admire how she really puts in the time to research the character before we shoot. I remember during my Hinata shoot that she went above and beyond to get perfect shots of me on top of rocks and trees and the thing about me is that I absolutely love to climb stuff ahaha and she loves that as well but bless her heart, I really made her worry when I stood near the very edge of this cliff ahaha. She’s a real trooper and likes when you have prepared poses and actions scenes before hand so we really connect when it comes to that. She’s amazing
Is there anything you want your fans and the fans of PUNK BLACK
to know? I just want everyone to know that its important to do what you love and love what you do. If you have big dreams or goals do whatever you can to achieve them no matter how long it takes because it’ll be so worth it in the end.
